Case Study: Process and Development

UC Davis River Truss Requirements

ANSWER THE QUESTION...

We’re designing a new product and we’ve laid out some initial ideas. Where can we go to get a second opinion and suggestions on the design?

Before wasting time on modeling and detailed analysis, we set about developing concepts based on firmly grounded classical engineering principles. This ambitious project had some severe design constraints that required extensive trade studies to be performed. Based on hand calculations we determined that a viable configuration would be 30 ft instead of the original requirement of a 40 ft truss span.

Regardless of how good an engineer is with software tools, there really is no replacement for well-heeled engineering skills.
