Case Study: Process and Development

UC Davis River Truss Requirements

ANSWER THE QUESTION...

I’m worried about little things, too. Does it make sense for me to look at every little thing? Or should I just cross my fingers during testing?

Even though it may seem rudimentary, performing a detailed Hertzian contact analysis to determine pin hole breakthrough for the leg pins is as important as any other analysis. If a pin on one leg were to break through, this could result in a collapse of the entire truss system. As the study shows at left, we determined that even the worst load case didn’t provide stresses high enough to reach the ultimate or even the yield strength of Aluminum 6061-T6. Though it may seem minor, it was certainly worth the extra hour and a half of analysis time...
