UC Davis River Truss Project Case Study

MARCA ArenaHigh quality product development doesn't mean spending an arm and a leg. University of California at Davis Professor Greg Pasternack had a task - develop a system to measure hydraulic jumps in river flows based on using some of their conventional measurement devices.

The primary limitation hindering the quantitative study of natural jumps was field technology capable of precise and accurate measurements in high-velocity and turbulent conditions. By forming a partership with Pitzer Consulting engineers, Prof Pasternack had access to the know-how of experienced automation and simulation personnel. By carefully understanding and documenting the requirements beforehand, we were able to deliver a piece of testing equipment unparalled by his colleagues in the university system.

Skills to Turn a Prototype into a Production Piece

Traditionally, a design firm would develop a design, manufacture a prototype, make changes, and continue iterating until the design is viable. Using software tools to enhance the product development process, Pitzer Consulting was able to deliver a quality finished product to the UC Davis Department of Land, Air, and Water Resources while only consuming a limited number of resources - thus making possible an ambitious project on a limited budget.

Extensive skill sets and resources were leveraged that enabled a design that was thoroughly analyzed from concept through manufacturing. By using mechanism simulation and synthesis tools, structural analysis tools, and visualization tools, Pitzer Consulting was able to deliver a well-developed design without the need for costly and time-consuming prototypes or errors.

Additionally, Pitzer Consulting engineers have considerable hands-on manufacturing experience to make sure a design is cost-efficient and effectively designed. And if the job requires expertise outside their realm of knowledge, Pitzer Consulting has access to an extensive network of technical professionals and resources.

By having immediate access to information regarding component and system performance, Pitzer Consulting quickly evolved a design that performed exceptionally. Pitzer Consulting’s multi-discipline approach to design engineering proved to be a cost-effective success for the UC Davis Hydrology Department River Truss project.

"By working closely with Pitzer Consulting engineers in a collaborative effort, we were able to develop a scientific concept into a custom, practical engineering reality"
